Know Your Rights
Patient Rights under the NHIF
Everything you need to know before visiting a dentist under health insurance.
1
Free Choice of Dentist
Health-insured patients can receive treatment from any dentist who has a contract with the National Health Insurance Fund, regardless of their registered address.
2
Health Insurance Booklet
When visiting, bring your personal health insurance booklet — it records all performed procedures, including procedure code, tooth code, dentist’s details, and date.
3
Change Your Choice at Any Time
Health-insured patients are free to choose or change their dentist for each of the covered services at any time.
4
Right to Information
You have the right to be informed about the service packages, scope, and costs of covered treatments before receiving them.
5
User Fee
A user fee is payable at each visit in accordance with Article 37 of the Health Insurance Act. Individuals under 18 and certain categories of citizens are exempt.
6
Free X-rays
If necessary, you are entitled to a free intraoral (sector) X-ray and panoramic X-ray, prescribed with a referral from an outpatient dental care provider.

Exemption from Fees
Patients Exempt from User Fees
Certain categories of citizens are exempt from paying the user fee under Article 37, paragraph 1 of the Health Insurance Act. Check if you fall into one of the following groups:

Children under 18

⚠️
Note on composite resin fillings: At Dental Clinic "Dr. Botev" we consider chemical composite an unsuitable material and do not use it. If you wish to have a filling covered by the NHIF, it will be performed using a higher-quality material — please discuss this with your dentist before the procedure.
